New ICANN webinars on DNS

NIC together with ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) are planning a second series of webinars and online trainings primarily aimed at the Internet Community in Central Europe and the Baltics. The timeline for the upcoming trainings:

  • 29 Sep: Resolver usage in the EU
  • 27 Oct: DNSSEC 101
  • 24 Nov: Challenges with Alternative Name Systems
  • 15 Dec: Interesting ICANN Internet measurement results – ITHI, DAAR, DNSTICR

Resolver usage in the EU

Date: 29 Sep 2022 (Thursday) Time: from 12:00 till 12:30 (UTC)
Speaker: Alain Durand, Principal Technologist ICANN
Platform: Zoom

DNS resolution is typically done either by Internet service provider (ISP) resolvers or by public resolvers. In January 2022, ICANN’s Office of the Chief Technical Officer (OCTO) observed that 95% of consumers served by large European Union (EU) consumer ISPs are using their ISP- provided Domain Name System (DNS) resolvers. Only about 4% of consumers served by large EU consumer ISPs are using public resolvers such as Google Public DNS (3%), Cloudflare (0.6%), and Cisco OpenDNS (0.4%). This talk will explore those findings in more details.

The presentation based on an ICANN OCTO study published in March 2022: https://www.icann.org/en/system/files/files/octo-032-01mar22-en.pdf

Thanks to everyone who participated in our previous webinars:

  • “DNS 101” Where ICANN’s Technical Engagement Manager David Huberman outlined how DNS works and how different DNS components interact with each other. The recording and presentation is available here.
  • “ICANN’S TECHNICAL MISSION” that outlined ICANN in s role coordinating the technical aspects of the Internet’s unique identifier system. The recording and presentation is available here.
  • “HISTORY OF THE ROOT SERVER SYSTEM” that took the audience from the beginnings of the DNS in 1983 through the present day. It focused on the development of the Root Server System from just one root server to today’s 13 root servers, explained some of the mystery behind why the root servers are assigned the way they are. The recording and presentation is available here.
  • “DNS ECOSYSTEM SECURITY” that covered the best practices in securing the overall ecosystem of DNS, from the threats to mitigation perspective.
