At the CyberChess 2025 conference, NIC.LV Director Katrīna Sataki shared her insights in a presentation titled “The Three Laws of a Wiser DNSaster Prevention”.

Referencing economist Carlo Cipolla’s “The Basic Laws of Human Stupidity,” she reminded the audience that the human factor remains both inevitable and the most dangerous part of any security system.

“No one ever fully appreciates how many foolish mistakes actually circulate in our daily lives,” quoted Katrīna Sataki, applying Cipolla’s idea to the cybersecurity world — from domain name management to DNS configurations.

During her talk, she illustrated several real-world examples that were both humorous and thought-provoking:

A company lets its domain name expire — and suddenly loses its website, email, and reputation.
An administrator types in the wrong IP address, and an entire internal service disappears.
A small DNS configuration change triggers a chain reaction, escalating into a global outage.

These examples were not just about mistakes — they were about human nature in technology.
